What is a pole spear?
Usually, those that are a beginner in spearfishing begin with pole spears because the pole spears are light in weight, reasonable in price, and comfortable to utilize. It is considered that long pole spears are more productive than short ones. Pole spears created of aluminum serve well on bigger fish. The brands that offer pole spears are SEAC, Mares, Salvimar, Epsealon, and Sigalsub. A pole spear is a simple and versatile tool used for underwater fishing, specifically spearfishing. It consists of a long pole or shaft with a spearhead attached to one end. The pole spear is manually propelled towards the target fish to impale and secure it for capture. The main components of a pole spear include:
Pole or Shaft: The pole spear´s main body is typically made of lightweight and durable material such as fiberglass, carbon fiber, or aluminum. The length of the pole can vary, ranging from around 1.2 to 3 meters or more, depending on personal preference and the target species.
Spearhead: At the tip of the pole spear, there is a detachable or fixed spearhead designed to penetrate and hold the fish. The spearhead can take various forms, such as a single barbed point, a trident with multiple prongs, or a slip tip design that allows the spear to detach from the pole upon impact for better fish retention.
Sling or Band: Some pole spears feature a sling or band near the rear end of the pole. The sling is pulled back and held in place with one hand while aiming, providing additional power and propulsion when released, similar to a slingshot mechanism.
Pole spears are known for their simplicity and ease of use. They offer a more straightforward and low tech approach to spearfishing compared to other methods like spearguns. Pole spears are suitable for hunting smaller to medium sized fish in close proximity, where precise aiming and quick reflexes play a significant role.
It´s important to note that using a pole spear for spearfishing requires proper training, knowledge of local regulations, and adherence to sustainable fishing practices. Additionally, always prioritize safety and respect for marine life and ecosystems when engaging in spearfishing activities.
