What are different types of buoys?
A buoy is a general term for an object used to show direction. The form and color of a buoy differ according to its conscious use. Buoys come in different sizes and colors and can be built of many various materials. They are normally created with an outlet at the head for stuffing with water, and ropes attached to the external side that helps in keeping the buoy upright in the water. There are many uses for buoys, such as signing the area of shipwrecks, negotiating waterways, marking underwater hurdles, and a lot more. There are some types of buoys given below:
Lifting buoys
Lifting buoys, also known as salvage or lifting bags, are specialized buoys used in various underwater operations, particularly in salvage and recovery operations. These buoys are designed to provide buoyancy and lifting capacity to raise submerged objects to the surface.
Lifting buoys are typically made of robust and durable materials such as reinforced PVC or nylon. They are constructed with airtight compartments that can be filled with gas, usually compressed air, to provide the necessary buoyancy for lifting heavy objects. The buoyancy capacity of lifting buoys can vary significantly, ranging from a few kilograms to several tons, depending on their size and purpose.
Deco buoys
Deco buoys, also known as decompression buoys or safety sausages, are buoyancy devices used in scuba diving to help divers control their ascent during decompression stops.
Deco buoys typically consist of an inflatable tube made of durable materials such as nylon or PVC. They are designed to be inflated by the diver using a regulator, either manually or by attaching the regulator to a low pressure inflator hose. Once inflated, the buoy floats on the surface of the water, providing a visual reference for the diver´s ascent.
Torpedo buoy
A torpedo buoy, also known as a diver´s torpedo float, is a type of buoy used in scuba diving. It is designed to provide a streamlined, hydrodynamic shape that reduces drag and allows it to move through the water with less resistance.
The buoy is shaped like a torpedo, with a pointed nose and a cylindrical body that tapers toward the tail. It is typically made of a durable, lightweight material such as PVC or nylon, and may be brightly colored or have reflective markings to make it more visible to boats and other watercraft.
Marker buoy
A marker buoy, also known as a surface marker buoy SMB, is a type of buoy used in scuba diving to mark a diver´s location or signal to the surface support team.
A marker buoy typically consists of an inflatable tube made of durable materials such as nylon or PVC. The buoy is attached to a line that connects it to the diver or a weight on the seabed. When the buoy is inflated, it rises to the surface, providing a visible marker for the diver´s location.
You can buy different types of buoys from Cressi, SEAC, Mares, Salvimar, Aqualung, Apeks brands.
