Innovative design with some big problems

I'm a fan of Mountain Hardwear and this stretch design is genuinely innovative. The dimples look cool in my opinion and there's much to admire in the design. The fabric feels soft if a bit chalky but is more abrasion resistant than the typical lightweight nylon & polyester shells of a lot of down jackets. The 800 fill down is very warm, tested on a hike in Iceland last December. The pockets are insulated so your hands are kept toasty. The claims about stretchiness are genuine and I found this jacket excellent for hiking & snow walking. It's also well made in Vietnam, like many MH products. There are some serious negatives however. 1) It's relatively heavy 2) As it's heavy, it's silly to have no adjustment for the hood or cuffs. It's not a Ghostwhisperer 3) It's short & provides no protection for your bum 4) The zip is one-way only 5) The fit is very athletic. I'm an L in almost all MH jackets but I find the cut of this a bit restricting, even with the stretch. The XL feels too loose on the other hand. 6) I find the hood perfect but if I didn't, it's not adjustable as another reviewer mentioned. Neither are the cuffs which aren't quite right for my long & rangy arms. I think MH has made an excellent product, which is compromised by design decisions which are useful for a niche market. Even then a two way front zipper would have been useful for hiking but it doesn't have that. There was no point in saving ounces on this jacket & so the limited features are a curiosity rather than sensible. MH really needs to rethink the entire stretchdown range as there's a best in class product here struggling to get out from uncompromising & often not sensible design decisions. The innovation & quality brings it up to 3 stars but the problems for me mean I don't wear it as much as I should a jacket of this cost and theoretical usefulness.

Excellent quality

This jacket is super warm, waterproof and super comfortable. Its stretch is very real and practical for climbing or sports that require real mobility. The hood is a little big (without helmet) and unfortunately without strings adjustment. The inside and outside pockets are a plus. The general impression is good: we are dealing with a quality product.
